I should have done my homework instead, but I could help myself.
Recently I’ve noticed an upsurge of artists bitching because credit is not given to them when their work is reblogged. They take it personally. This is very silly: Eventually, if it gets tumbled enough, or taken over to “we heart it” (or whatever that site is actually called), or Pinterest, or whatever , there is a strong possibility that it will lose the credit.
Add that to the fact that most people who are posting stuff from those accumulation sites are not artists. They don’t understand what the big deal is about. Here is how it works: Grog trawls the Interwebs. Grog see pretty picture. Grog re-blogs. Sometimes Grog gets hateful mail from an artist & gets very hurt. Grog thought that re-blogging was a compliment. Grog would have responded just as well to a nice note, but now Grog thinks all artists are assholes.
The problem is, all too often, these same artists who are so offended are not actually signing their work.
Come on, are we in grade school? Sign your work or stop complaining.
As an after note: There are a few blogs who do remove credit on purpose, for purposes of aesthetics…& there are artists who feel that adding a watermark or signature will destroy the purity of the piece. I am not commenting on either of their actions. What I’m saying is, for good or bad, if the piece is watermarked or signed, however subtle, someone like me who’s interested will find & follow that clue.
